Drop taxi from Chennai — the city’s default booking
Most cities on this site are round-trip cities. Chennai is a one-way city. More enquiries here are for a drop than for a return journey, and the local word for it is drop taxi — not “one-way cab”, which is how the national platforms label it.
That difference in wording matters more than it sounds. It is a genuine gap between how people here search and how aggregators write, and it is the reason a local operator can be found at all.
The corridors
The regular one-way runs out of Chennai fall into three groups:
The long haul — Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy. These are the drops where one-way pricing saves the most, because the return leg you are not paying for is substantial.
The pilgrimage drop — Tirupati, and the temple towns. Often a drop out with a different return, or a family travelling on rather than back.
The short coastal run — Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, down the ECR. These are short enough that the minimum distance rule usually decides the fare rather than the actual kilometres, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes.
Where we will talk you out of it
If you are going to Pondicherry on Saturday and coming back Sunday, two drops cost more than one round trip. Same for a day trip to Mahabalipuram, or any journey where you want the car waiting for you.
We will say so on the phone. It costs us the second booking and it is still the right answer — a customer who was quoted honestly the first time calls back.
ECR or GST Road
For anything heading south, the road decides the journey. ECR is the coastal route and the right choice for Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram. GST Road is the inland highway for Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and everything continuing to Trichy, Madurai and the far south. They are not interchangeable, and taking the wrong one adds an hour.

It is a one-way trip — you pay for your direction of travel plus a minimum distance, not for a return leg you are not on. 'Drop taxi' is the Tamil Nadu term for it; national booking sites call it a one-way cab, which is why searching their way often does not find local operators.
Which drops are most common from Chennai?
Bangalore, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirupati, Pondicherry and Vellore, in roughly that order of frequency. Any destination we drive is available one way.
When is a round trip actually cheaper than a one-way drop?
When you are coming back within about a day, or you want the car with you at the destination. Two separate drops usually cost more than one round trip. Tell us the full plan and we will quote both — we would rather lose the second booking than have you overpay and find out later.
Do I pay the return toll on a one-way drop?
No. On a one-way you pay the tolls in your direction of travel only.
Is there a minimum distance on a one-way drop?
Yes, and it exists because the car still has to come back, usually empty. Short drops are billed at the minimum rather than the actual distance, which is why a one-way to Pondicherry and a one-way to Vellore can cost the same.
