Six pujas, and one of them is yours
Chidambaram’s Thillai Nataraja temple is where Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, and it is one of the few major temples where the practical planning question is not opening hours but which of the six daily pujas you intend to attend.
The inner shrine is closed between them. Arrive at the wrong hour and you will walk a very large and very beautiful complex without seeing the sanctum, which is a long way to drive for a partial visit.
So: decide the puja, tell us, and the departure works backwards from it. Our drivers know the timings and how long the last stretch takes.
What makes the temple unusual
The Chit Sabha, the innermost sanctum, has a roof of gold tiles and holds the Akasha Lingam — which is to say it holds nothing, representing ether or space. The temple is also unusual in that it is administered by the Dikshitar community rather than the state, which affects how parts of it are accessed.
The thousand-pillared hall and the four tall gopurams covered in sculpture are what you see first; the Nataraja bronze iconography that spread across South East Asia originates conceptually here.
Pichavaram, which you should add
Twenty-odd kilometres away is Pichavaram, one of the largest mangrove forests in the world — second only to the Sundarbans — and you travel through it by boat along narrow channels roofed over by mangrove canopy. In places the water is a tunnel.
It receives a fraction of the visitors Chidambaram does, and a great many people who go rate it higher than the temple. It needs about three hours including the boat.
The road
You can take the ECR most of the way — down the coast past Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, then inland. Slightly longer than the inland highway and much the better drive, with Pondicherry available as a stop.
That combination — Pondicherry, Chidambaram, Pichavaram — makes an excellent two days rather than a hard one.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a quarter hours with a group who will be walking a large temple complex and then getting into a boat. Comfortable for six over this distance, and the boot takes an overnight bag for five with the third row folded. This is a route where the timing knowledge matters far more than the vehicle, and we would rather spend the conversation on the puja than on the car.

Do the puja timings really matter?
More than anything else about this trip. The temple performs six pujas a day and the inner shrine is closed between them. Arriving at the wrong hour means seeing the complex but not the sanctum. Tell us when you want to be there and we set the departure from it.
Is a permit needed?
No. Chidambaram is in Tamil Nadu, about four and a quarter hours from Chennai.
What is Pichavaram and is it worth adding?
A mangrove forest near Chidambaram, second in size only to the Sundarbans, and you go through it by boat along narrow channels under the canopy. Almost nobody includes it and almost everyone who does rates it above the temple. It needs three hours.
Can we take the ECR the whole way?
Largely, yes — down the coast through Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, then inland. It is longer than the inland route but a far better drive, and it lets you stop at Pondicherry.
One day or two?
Two, if you want Pichavaram as well. The temple alone is a long day trip. Adding the mangroves and doing both properly is a comfortable overnight, and Pondicherry on the way makes it a genuinely good two days.
