Two directions, two very different tours
Chennai sits at the top of a coastline and at the bottom of a pilgrimage corridor, and multi-day tours from here go one way or the other. They have almost nothing in common.
North — the pilgrimage circuit. Tirupati is the anchor, and it is the highest-frequency paid car journey out of this city. Two days covers Tirupati with Sri Kalahasti added; three lets you take Kanchipuram on the way out, which most people skip and should not.
South — the coastal and Chola circuit. Down the ECR through Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, then inland to Chidambaram, and on to Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Trichy. Four to five days does it properly — three of the UNESCO Chola temples, the Shore Temple, and Pichavaram, the mangrove forest almost nobody includes.
The two can be joined into a week, and it makes a genuinely good one.
How we quote a circuit
Not as a series of journeys. As one figure, built from:
- Total distance across the circuit
- The daily minimum applied per day, rather than freshly on each leg — this is the main saving against booking separately
- One driver bata per day
- Night halts where the driver stays over
- Toll, parking and permits at actuals
Booking Chennai–Tirupati and then Tirupati–Chennai as separate trips means paying two minimums for one journey. On a five-day circuit that arithmetic gets considerably worse.
The planning advice we actually give
Fewer places than you think. Temple towns are slow, the roads between them are slower than the map suggests, and most major temples close for several hours in the middle of the day. Four stops in a day becomes two.
Decide the darshan first if Tirupati is in the plan — the slot sets the departure, not the drive time. See the Tirupati guide.
Take Kanchipuram on the way, not as a separate day. It is on the road both north and south-west and costs a morning rather than a day.
Our drivers will reorder your list before you leave, and that reordering is usually worth more than the kilometres it saves.
The car on a multi-day circuit
Four or five people with a week’s luggage and the third row folded is the configuration these tours work best in. Six adults for four or five consecutive days is a different proposition from six adults for three hours — the third row that is fine on a temple run becomes tiring by day three, and we would rather size up than have you regret it on day four.
Tell us the group size for the whole circuit, not the first leg. More on that.
Booking tour packages in Chennai
Call or WhatsApp with the date, the time and the number of passengers, and we quote the full fare rather than a per-km rate to work out yourself. The driver's name and number reach you before the trip, not on the day.
Other services in Chennai: airport taxi , outstation , drop taxi , local packages , wedding car rental , corporate car rental . Full rate card on the pricing page, and the vehicle itself on the Ertiga page.
All bookings include a professional driver. We do not offer self-drive rentals.
Tour Packages in Chennai — FAQs
What multi-day tours run from Chennai?
Two main directions. North to Tirupati, often with Kalahasti and back in two days. South down the coast — Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Chidambaram and Pichavaram — over three or four. The temple circuit through Trichy, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam is the longer one at four to five days.
How is a tour priced against a series of separate trips?
As one figure. Distance across the whole circuit, the daily minimum applied per day rather than freshly on each leg, one bata per day, night halts where the driver stays over, and permits where a border is crossed. It is meaningfully cheaper than booking each leg.
Do we keep the same car and driver throughout?
Yes, and that is most of the value. One driver who knows the plan, no handovers in a strange town, and your luggage stays in the car.
How many days for the Chola temple circuit?
Four minimum, five comfortably. Trichy, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam with Darasuram and Gangaikondacholapuram, and Chidambaram on the way back down the coast. Four days means moving briskly.
Can you build a custom circuit?
Yes, and most of what we run is custom. Tell us the places and the days and we will tell you honestly which combination fits — usually by suggesting you drop one.
