Tirupati sits at the foot of the Tirumala hills in Andhra Pradesh, and the temple of Venkateswara on the hill above it is among the most visited places of worship anywhere in the world. That single fact shapes everything about the trip: you are not going sightseeing, you are keeping an appointment, and the appointment is the fixed point around which the driving arranges itself.
The ghat road up to Tirumala is the memorable part of the journey — a steady climb through forested hills with the plain opening out behind you. Coming up in first light, with mist still in the valleys, is genuinely worth setting an early alarm for.
Down in Tirupati town there is more than most visitors make time for — the Govindaraja Swamy temple near the railway station, and Sri Venkateswara museum — but in practice the darshan consumes the day and few groups plan beyond it.
The practical advice that matters: decide your darshan arrangements before you book the car, because the queue system and the slot you hold determine when you need to leave Chennai. Everything else follows from that.

Can the car take us up to Tirumala?
Cars go up the ghat road, but the arrangements at the top change and there are restrictions and parking limits to work around. Your driver will tell you where he can wait and where you will need to walk or take onward transport.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh, so an interstate permit applies from Tamil Nadu. It is charged at actuals and we quote the amount before you travel — we already hold the permit.
Should we book a round trip or two one-way drops?
Round trip, almost always. Same-day or next-day returns are cheaper as a round trip, and you want the car waiting rather than hunting for one in Tirupati after darshan.
How long does the whole trip take?
Allow a full day, not just the driving. The road is around three hours each way, and the time at the temple is the part that varies — from a couple of hours to most of the day depending on your slot and the crowd.
