A long day, or a short night
At around 510 km this is among the longest routes we run, and the honest framing is that it is a day’s work either way — seven and a half hours of driving before anyone stops for anything.
The road is not the difficulty. The NH48 to Salem and then the NH544 is good four-lane highway for essentially the whole distance. What makes this trip is the decision about when to travel.
Leave at five in the morning and you arrive mid-afternoon with the day mostly gone but the evening usable.
Travel overnight and you arrive in the morning with a full working day ahead. On this particular route that is the option we recommend most often, especially for business travel, and the highway is good enough at night to make it comfortable rather than a compromise. The driver’s rest is planned around it.
Salem, the natural break
Roughly two thirds of the way sits Salem, and it is the sensible place to stop if you are travelling in daylight. For anyone with an extra day, Yercaud — the small hill station on the Shevaroy hills directly above the city — turns a necessary break into a reason to stop.
What is at Coimbatore
Coimbatore is an industrial city — textiles, engineering, and a great deal of business travel — and most people arriving here are either working or passing through to the hills.
That second group is large. Coimbatore is the gateway to Ooty, Valparai, Kodaikanal and, across the Palakkad Gap, to Munnar and Kochi. A good share of these drops are the first leg of a hill trip rather than an arrival.
In the city itself, the Isha Yoga Center and Adiyogi on the Velliangiri foothills draw steady visitors, and Marudhamalai and Perur temples are worth an afternoon.
If the hills are your real destination, say so when you book — we may suggest going straight through rather than stopping, which changes the shape of the journey.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Seven and a half hours of flat highway, which is where an Ertiga’s running cost advantage over a larger MPV is at its most pronounced. For four or five people with luggage it is comfortable for that long. For six adults it is not, and on a route this length we would say so plainly and put you in something bigger rather than take the booking and hope.
