The Ertiga is a front-wheel-drive MPV, not a high-clearance SUV, and on ghat roads that trade works in your favour more often than against it. The ride is better over broken surfaces than a stiff body-on-frame vehicle, and the car is easier to place on a narrow hairpin than something wider.

What you do notice is weight. Loaded with six people and their bags, the climb is slower — the engine spends more time working, and the steeper sections of the Valparai road in particular are taken in a lower gear at a steady pace. That is not a fault; it is physics, and it is the reason to allow real time rather than the time a map quotes. The Ooty climb is gentler and better surfaced; Valparai is the one that tests both the car and the driver.

The airport is the opposite of Bangalore’s

Coimbatore International is roughly 10 km from the city — a short, cheap, ten-minute transfer. It is worth stating plainly because it is the reverse of the Bangalore situation, where the airport is 34 km out and the transfer is a significant fare. If you are used to paying Bangalore airport prices, Coimbatore will surprise you.

Hill trips, mostly, in family groups of four to six. Isha Yoga Center and the Adiyogi statue generate their own distinct pattern — short runs out and back, heavily concentrated around Mahashivratri. And there is steady corporate work from the textile and engineering businesses around the city and Tiruppur.
