An hour down the coast
At around 55 km this is the shortest route we publish, and it changes what the page is for. Nobody needs advice on surviving a one-hour drive. What people actually get wrong about Mahabalipuram is how to spend the day — and that starts with leaving early.
The road is the ECR, the East Coast Road, running south from Chennai beside the Bay of Bengal past salt pans and fishing villages. It is a pleasant hour rather than a chore. On weekend mornings it is slower, because a great many Chennai families are making the same trip.
What is at Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram — Mamallapuram — is a seventh and eighth century Pallava port, and what survives is a group of monuments carved out of the living granite of the place rather than built on it.
The Shore Temple stands right at the water’s edge and is the image everyone knows. The Pancha Rathas are five monolithic shrines each cut from a single boulder, in different architectural styles, as though someone were working through the possibilities. Arjuna’s Penance is an enormous bas-relief on an open rock face, and the best of the lot for many visitors. Krishna’s Butterball is a vast balanced boulder that children will not leave alone.
The practical warning: it is all open ground with very little shade. By midday in the hot months, walking between the monuments is uncomfortable rather than enjoyable, and the granite radiates heat. Early morning is not a preference here, it is the difference between a good day and a short one.
Why a round trip, not a drop
This is one of the clearest cases in our network for not booking one way. At 55 km, a single drop hits the minimum distance charge — so two drops means paying that twice, and having no car with you while you walk around the monuments for three hours. A round trip costs less and the car waits. We will say so on the phone.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A short, flat, easy run with a group who will get in and out of the car repeatedly and want the air conditioning on between stops. Six passengers are perfectly comfortable over an hour, and this is one of the few routes where the third row is simply not a consideration.

No. Mahabalipuram is in Tamil Nadu, an hour from Chennai. No interstate permit applies.
Can we add Pondicherry to the same trip?
Yes, and it is a natural extension — Pondicherry is further down the same coast road. That becomes a longer outstation booking rather than a local day trip, and we would quote it as one journey.
What time should we leave to avoid the heat?
By seven. The monuments are open ground with very little shade, and by midday walking between them is genuinely unpleasant. Early morning also gives you the Shore Temple with the light coming off the sea.
