A journey, not a transfer
At around 460 km this is the longest one-way drop we regularly run out of Chennai, and it deserves to be treated as a journey rather than a transfer. Seven and a half hours of driving, before stops, on the NH38 corridor down through Trichy and Dindigul.
The road is good — this is one of Tamil Nadu’s main arteries — so the challenge is not the driving. It is the shape of your day. An early start is the difference between arriving for a late lunch and arriving after dark, and on a route this long that is the whole decision.
Breaking it at Trichy
The natural halfway-ish point is Trichy, roughly two thirds of the way. The Rockfort temple, on its outcrop above the city, is worth the climb and the hour it costs, and Srirangam is close by.
Some groups go further and make Trichy an overnight stop, arriving in Madurai the next morning with energy for the temple rather than needing a sleep. If you are travelling with older passengers or small children, that is usually the better plan and we will say so.
What is at Madurai
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, and the Meenakshi Amman Temple at its heart is the reason most people come — a vast complex whose towers you see long before you reach it.
The practical note that matters more than any description: the car cannot drop you at the temple entrance. The streets around it are narrow and partly restricted, so you are dropped a short walk away and your driver waits at a designated spot. Agree the meeting point before you go in.
Madurai is also the base for the far south — Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thekkady, Kodaikanal — which is why a large share of these drops are the first leg of a longer circuit rather than a destination in themselves. Tell us if that is your plan and we will quote the whole thing.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Long, flat and fast, with luggage for a week rather than a night — which is the configuration an Ertiga handles well with four or five aboard and the third row folded. Seven hours is a long time for six adults, and we would put a group that size in something larger.

It is a popular choice on this route, particularly for families continuing to Rameswaram or Kanyakumari the next morning. The road is good and you arrive with the day intact rather than spent.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both cities are in Tamil Nadu, so there is no interstate permit on this route.
Is a one-way drop much cheaper?
Yes, and this is the clearest case for it. A round trip means paying for 920 km. If you are continuing south or flying home from Madurai, the drop saves you a great deal.
