Over the top, not around
Thekkady is reached from Madurai in four hours on a largely level road, and from Coimbatore in four and a half over the roof of the Western Ghats. Same destination, and the drives could not be less alike.
The Coimbatore route climbs — through Palakkad or Pollachi, up past Marayoor and its sandalwood forest, onto the high tea plateau around Munnar, and then across and down to Kumily at the border.
It is the more beautiful road by a wide margin. It is also higher, slower and considerably more weather-dependent, which is why the departure time matters.
Leave at six, because of cloud
The high section fills with cloud from the early afternoon. When it does, you lose the visibility and the pace, and the view — which is most of the reason to take this road rather than the Madurai one — disappears.
A six o’clock start from Coimbatore gets you over the top in clear air.
The trip this really wants to be
Driving Coimbatore to Thekkady in one day means passing Munnar without stopping, which is a waste of the best part of the route.
The better version is three days: Coimbatore to Munnar, a night and a day in the tea country, then on to Thekkady. It costs a night and turns a transfer into a holiday. We quote it as one circuit.
At Thekkady
The Periyar lake cruise is the reason most people come, and the practical point is unchanged whichever direction you arrive from: the slots are fixed and they sell out. Book the boat, then tell us the time, and the drive is planned backwards from it. The early boats are when animals actually come down to the water.
The reserve also offers guided walks, bamboo rafting and a border hike, all of which need booking and all of which show you more than the boat does.
Kumily is a spice town and the cardamom, pepper and clove plantations around it take visitors — a working agriculture rather than a display.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a half hours of climbing, high-altitude driving and descent, with luggage for several days and a border crossing. The ride quality earns its place on the rougher high sections. For four or five people this is comfortable; six adults across that much climbing is more than we would recommend, particularly if you are continuing to Munnar or Alleppey afterwards.

How does this differ from going to Thekkady from Madurai?
Madurai approaches from the east through Theni and Kumily, largely on the level until the last climb. From Coimbatore you go over the top — through Palakkad or Pollachi, up past Marayoor and Munnar, and across the high ranges. Longer, higher, slower and far more spectacular.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Thekkady is in Kerala and you start in Tamil Nadu, so an interstate permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted before you travel.
Should we stop at Munnar on the way?
Most people should. Munnar sits on this route and it is worth a night in its own right. Doing Coimbatore to Munnar to Thekkady across three days is a considerably better trip than driving straight through in four and a half hours.
Do we still need to book the Periyar boat in advance?
Yes. The lake cruises run in fixed slots and they sell out. Book the slot first and tell us the time — the drive is planned around it.
Why leave so early?
Because the high section clouds over from the early afternoon. You lose both visibility and speed, and the view is most of the reason to take this road.
