Two and a half hours, and then a hill
This is Coimbatore’s shortest pilgrimage run and one of its most-booked. The road out through Udumalpet and Dharapuram asks nothing of anybody — flat, straightforward, two and a half hours.
Everything interesting is at the far end, and specifically on top of a rock.
Getting up
The Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple sits on a granite hill above the town, and there are three ways to the top:
The steps — the traditional route, done barefoot, and a genuine climb. Many pilgrims would not consider anything else.
The winch railway — a funicular that has run for decades and carries most families.
The ropeway — quicker, with a view on the way.
Riding up and walking down is the compromise most groups settle on. Whichever you choose, go early: by six from Coimbatore, because the rock heats up fast and the crowd builds through the morning.
Why Palani matters
It is one of the Arupadai Veedu — the six principal abodes of Murugan — and one of the most visited temples in Tamil Nadu. The deity is made of navapashanam, a compound of nine substances, which is unusual enough to be part of why people come.
The panchamirtham is the other reason. The temple’s own preparation of banana, jaggery, ghee, cardamom and dates, it now carries a geographical indication tag, and people buy it by the kilo to take home. Buy it at the temple.
Thaipusam in January or February is when Palani becomes one of the busiest places in South India, with pilgrims walking in from great distances. Book far ahead and expect a full town.
Onward to Kodaikanal
Palani sits on the western approach to the Kodai hills, which is why a good number of these bookings do not return the same day. Palani in the morning, Kodaikanal in the afternoon, a night up there and back — that is a satisfying two-day trip from Coimbatore and we quote it as one.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A short run carrying a family group that frequently includes elderly relatives on pilgrimage. This is where an MPV earns its keep over a sedan: high seats, wide rear doors, an easy step-in, and six seats so the family travels together. Luggage is rarely the issue on a day trip; getting in and out comfortably eight times is.
