Through the Gap
This route exists because of a gap in a mountain range. The Western Ghats run almost unbroken down the western edge of the peninsula, and the Palakkad Gap is the one substantial break in them — about thirty kilometres wide, and Coimbatore sits at its eastern mouth.
The practical consequence is that Kerala is genuinely close from Coimbatore, on a fast level road, in a way it is not from Chennai, Bangalore, Madurai or Mysore. You do not climb over anything. You drive through.
The Gap is also the reason Coimbatore has the climate it has, and why the wind farms stand where they do — it funnels the monsoon wind.
Once through, the road runs down via Palakkad and Thrissur, and that second half is where the time goes: more towns, more traffic, slower going. Four hours in total is a fair estimate.
What is at Kochi
Kochi is really several places with one name.
Fort Kochi is the historic peninsula — Portuguese, Dutch and British in layers, with St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was buried, the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, and Mattancherry Palace with its extraordinary murals. The Paradesi synagogue in Jew Town is small and remarkable.
Ernakulam, across the water, is the working modern city.
The backwaters begin south of here, and a good number of our passengers are heading onward to Alleppey rather than stopping in Kochi.
For food, this is a coastal city that takes fish seriously, and the Kerala-Syrian Christian and Mappila cooking here is quite distinct from anything in Tamil Nadu.
Kathakali performances are widely available in Fort Kochi and, unusually for tourist-facing culture, some of them are very good.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four hours of level road, no climbing, with luggage for a longer trip — and often ending at an airport where boot space is the actual requirement. Fold the third row and four or five people’s checked bags fit comfortably. Six passengers with full luggage does not work in this car, and on an airport run that is worth knowing before rather than at the kerb.

How long does it take?
Around four hours. The Gap section is quick; the stretch from Thrissur onward is slower, with more towns and traffic, and that is where the time goes.
Can you take us to the airport rather than the city?
Yes. Cochin airport is at Nedumbassery, north of the city and actually a little closer on this road, so an airport drop is a slightly shorter run than a Fort Kochi drop. Tell us which and the fare reflects it.
Is one way better than a round trip?
Usually yes, on this route. Most people flying out of Kochi or continuing into Kerala take the drop. A round trip only makes sense if you want the car with you in Kerala for several days.
