What is at Valparai
Valparai is a tea town at about 1,000 metres in the Anamalai hills, and it is the least visited and most rewarding of the hill destinations reachable from Coimbatore. There is no equivalent of Ooty’s crowds here.
The reason to come is the landscape and the wildlife. The plateau is almost entirely tea, rolling away in every direction, broken by patches of rainforest that hold species you will not see elsewhere — most famously the lion-tailed macaque, which turns up in the shola forest at the roadside with surprising regularity. Elephants and gaur move through the estates, and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve surrounds the whole area.
Athirappilly falls lies over the Kerala border and is a common onward extension. Sholayar dam and Chinnakallar, one of the wettest places in India, are closer.
But the honest answer to “what is at Valparai” is: the road there. From the Aliyar reservoir the route turns up through an intense concentration of hairpin bends, climbing hard through forest with the plain dropping away behind. It is one of the great drives in the country and it demands respect — narrow in places, wet often, and shared with animals that have right of way.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
With four or five aboard, well — the ride quality helps on the rougher sections and the car is easy to place on tight bends. But be realistic: a fully loaded car works hard on this climb, the journey is slower than the distance implies, and six adults on those switchbacks for three hours is a long time in the third row. This is a route where we would rather move a group of six into something larger.

Is Valparai harder to reach than Ooty?
Considerably. The climb from Aliyar is a dense sequence of tight hairpins gaining height quickly, and it takes far longer than the 100 km suggests. It is the most demanding ghat road we drive regularly.
Can we do it as a day trip from Coimbatore?
We would strongly advise against it. Six hours of switchbacks in a day to spend two hours at the top is a poor trade, and the light matters — you want to be on that road in daylight. Stay a night.
Will we see wildlife on the road?
Very possibly. The route passes through forest where elephants, gaur and macaques cross, and the tea estates above hold lion-tailed macaques. That means driving to the conditions rather than to a schedule, and it is another reason not to be on this road after dark.
Is a permit needed?
No, it is all within Tamil Nadu. A hill charge applies on ghat routes and we quote it upfront.
What time should we leave?
Early — by six from Coimbatore. That gets you through Pollachi and onto the climb with the whole day ahead, and gets the hairpins done in good light.
