Two roads, and the choice is yours
Coimbatore to Bangalore is one of the few journeys we run where the route is a real decision rather than a detail, and a booking app will simply pick one for you.
The Sathyamangalam road is the shorter one. North through Sathyamangalam — a tiger reserve in the Eastern Ghats with a large elephant population — over the Sathy ghat, across Bandipur, and up through Mysore. It is a considerably better drive and it is slower, because both forest sections are taken at deliberately low speed and both close to through traffic overnight.
The Salem highway is the longer one in distance and usually the faster one in time. NH544 to Salem, then NH44 north. Four-laned, dull, and available at any hour — including overnight, which the forest route is not.
So: if your arrival time is fixed and tight, take the highway. If you would rather the drive was worth something, take the forest and leave by five.

The border and the timing
You cross Tamil Nadu into Karnataka, so an interstate permit applies — a quoted line on the fare rather than a delay.
On the forest route, the overnight restrictions are the binding constraint and we plan the departure around them. On the highway route, the Bangalore end is the variable: as on every road into that city, the last stretch depends entirely on the hour and on which part of Bangalore you are going to.
Tell us the area, not just the city. Whitefield, Electronic City and the centre are effectively different destinations on a six-hour journey.
What is at the far end
Bangalore is covered in depth on our Chennai to Bangalore page. What is specific to arriving from this direction is that you come in from the south-west through Mysore road rather than from the east — so Mysore is a natural stop rather than a detour, and a great many of these bookings become Coimbatore–Mysore–Bangalore across two days.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Six hours either way, with the forest option adding slow scenic driving where the ride quality and quiet cabin genuinely matter. For four or five people with luggage this is comfortable and economical. Six adults for six hours is a stretch, and on the forest route — where stopping is restricted — we would rather have a car that is not full.

Which route will the driver take?
Ask, because there are two and they are not equivalent. The Sathyamangalam road is shorter and runs through two forest reserves with restrictions and a ghat; the Salem highway is longer, faster and dull. If you have a fixed arrival time, take the highway. If you would rather see something, take the forest.
What are the forest restrictions?
Both Sathyamangalam and Bandipur restrict through traffic overnight to protect animals crossing. So the forest route is a daylight option only, and we leave by five to use it.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. You cross from Tamil Nadu into Karnataka, so an interstate permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted upfront.
Should we travel overnight?
Only on the Salem highway — the forest route is closed overnight in any case. An overnight run via Salem works well for business travel and gets you into Bangalore for a morning meeting.
Is a drop much cheaper than a round trip?
Yes, at 365 km. A round trip means paying for 730 km, and most people on this corridor are flying home from Bangalore or staying on.
