One way is charged for your direction plus the minimum distance. A round trip charges both legs with the daily minimum applied — which is why the one-way total is lower even at a higher per-km rate. Prefer a single agreed figure with toll and permit folded in? Ask for an all-inclusive quote.

The hinge of the southern corridor

Trichy — Tiruchirappalli — sits roughly two thirds of the way down the Chennai to Madurai road, and that position defines most of our bookings here. People stop in Trichy rather than travel to it.

That is not a criticism of the place. It is a genuinely good stop, and if you are driving to Madurai, Rameswaram or Kanyakumari, breaking the journey here is considerably more civilised than doing the whole run in one push — particularly with older passengers or children.

The road down is the NH38 through Villupuram and Perambalur, five and a half hours of good four-lane driving.

What is at Trichy

Rockfort is the image of the city: a temple complex on an abrupt outcrop of ancient granite rising straight out of the streets, reached by a few hundred steps cut into the rock. The Thayumanaswami temple is partway up and the Uchi Pillayar shrine is at the top, with the whole city and the Kaveri laid out below. It is an open climb, so morning or late afternoon.

Srirangam, on an island in the Kaveri just north of the city, is the far larger site and arguably the more significant — the Ranganathaswamy temple is among the biggest functioning temple complexes anywhere in the world, seven concentric walled enclosures with a town living inside the outer ones. You can drive into part of it, which surprises people.

Jambukeswarar at Thiruvanaikaval is close by and much quieter.

The Thanjavur pairing

If you have a second day, Thanjavur is close, and the Brihadeeswarar temple there is the finest thing the Cholas built — a thousand years old, with a tower that has stood without mortar since. It is the strongest reason to make Trichy two nights instead of one, and we will happily quote the pair as one circuit.

Why this route suits an Ertiga

Five and a half hours of flat highway with luggage for a multi-day trip, which is where an Ertiga is at its most economical relative to a larger MPV. Four or five people with the third row folded is genuinely comfortable. Six adults for that long is a stretch, and on a circuit that continues south the next day we would size up rather than have the third row spoil three days instead of one.

Still coming to this page: named toll plazas and amounts, named break stops. Those come from our own drivers rather than from a map, and we would rather leave them off than print a figure we have not checked. Ask on the call and we will tell you the toll for this route.

All bookings include a professional driver. We do not offer self-drive rentals.

Booking this route

We drive Trichy to Chennai as well, at the same rate — the fare depends on the distance and the direction of travel, not on which end you start from. There is one page for both directions rather than two pages saying the same thing.

Chennai to Trichy — FAQs

Is Trichy usually a destination or a stop?

Both, and more often a stop. It sits about two thirds of the way down the Chennai to Madurai corridor, so a lot of our Trichy bookings are people breaking a longer journey or continuing to Madurai, Rameswaram or Thanjavur the next day.

How long is the drive?

Around five and a half hours on the NH38. It is good road throughout, so an early start is the difference between arriving for lunch and arriving in the dark.

Is a permit needed?

No. Trichy is in Tamil Nadu.

Can we add Thanjavur?

Yes, and it is a very common pairing — Thanjavur is close and the Brihadeeswarar temple is arguably the single most impressive building in Tamil Nadu. It turns a one-night stop into a proper two-day trip.

How long does the Rockfort climb take?

Allow an hour and a half including the steps, and more if you stop at the shrines on the way up. It is a genuine climb of a few hundred steps, in the open, so morning or late afternoon rather than midday.
