One way is charged for your direction plus the minimum distance. A round trip charges both legs with the daily minimum applied — which is why the one-way total is lower even at a higher per-km rate. Prefer a single agreed figure with toll and permit folded in? Ask for an all-inclusive quote.

The junction town

Salem’s importance on this site is partly its own and partly its position. It is a substantial industrial city — steel, textiles, engineering — and it sits at the junction where the roads to Coimbatore, Bangalore and the deep south separate.

That is why Salem turns up as the break point on half a dozen of our long routes, and why a good share of Chennai to Salem bookings are people whose real destination is further on.

The road is the NH48 through Vellore and Krishnagiri, five and a half hours of good four-lane highway.

The working pattern

At five and a half hours each way, a same-day return is a very long day — eleven hours of driving plus whatever you came to do.

So most business travel on this corridor takes one of two shapes: travel the evening before, or travel overnight and work the following day. Both mean the driver’s rest is planned rather than assumed, and both are considerably better than attempting the round trip in a day.

For a day of factory or plant visits at the far end, book with waiting rather than as two drops — visits overrun and a waiting car costs less than the alternative.

Yercaud, the reason to stay

Directly above Salem, reached by a short ghat of twenty or so hairpins, is Yercaud — a small hill station on the Shevaroy hills at around 1,500 metres.

It has a lake with a path round it, Pagoda Point for sunrise with its cairns of stacked stones, and Lady’s Seat for the sunset view back down the ghat road. The hills grow coffee, oranges and pepper, and some estates take visitors.

What it does not have is crowds. Yercaud receives a small fraction of Ooty’s visitors, and for anyone finishing two days of meetings in Salem it is the best possible use of a spare afternoon — twenty minutes of climbing and the temperature drops noticeably.

Kurumbapatti zoological park is on the way up, and the Sugavaneswarar temple in the old town fills an hour.

Why this route suits an Ertiga

Business travel with three or four people, laptop bags and samples, and a five and a half hour run each way — where the running cost against a larger MPV over a repeated trip is materially lower and the cabin is quiet enough to work in. If you add Yercaud, the short ghat is well within what a loaded Ertiga handles comfortably.

Still coming to this page: named toll plazas and amounts, named break stops. Those come from our own drivers rather than from a map, and we would rather leave them off than print a figure we have not checked. Ask on the call and we will tell you the toll for this route.

All bookings include a professional driver. We do not offer self-drive rentals.

Booking this route

We drive Salem to Chennai as well, at the same rate — the fare depends on the distance and the direction of travel, not on which end you start from. There is one page for both directions rather than two pages saying the same thing.

Chennai to Salem — FAQs

Is this mostly business travel?

Largely. Salem is a steel, textile and engineering centre and most of what we drive on this corridor is work travel. It is also the standard break point for anyone continuing to Coimbatore, Ooty or Madurai.

Is a permit needed?

No. Both Chennai and Salem are in Tamil Nadu, about five and a half hours apart on the NH48.

How should a business day be structured?

At five and a half hours each way, a same-day return is a very long day. Most people travel the evening before or overnight, work the following day, and return the day after. We plan the driver's rest accordingly.

What is at Yercaud?

A small quiet hill station on the Shevaroy hills directly above the city, reached by a short ghat of twenty or so hairpins. Lake, viewpoints, coffee and orange growing, and a fraction of Ooty's visitors. It is the one genuine reason to extend a Salem trip.

Is Salem a good place to break a longer journey?

Yes, and it is why the town appears on so many of our itineraries. It sits at the junction for Coimbatore, Bangalore and the south, so it is the natural halfway stop on several long routes.
