The honest advice, first
At around 700 km this is the longest journey on the site, running nearly the full length of Tamil Nadu. Eleven hours of driving before anybody stops for anything.
Do not do it in one day. We will say so when you call. You would leave in the dark, arrive in the dark, and spend the following morning too tired to appreciate a place whose entire purpose is watching the sun come up out of the sea.
Break it — and Madurai is where
Madurai sits at roughly three quarters of the way and it is the obvious stop. Not a compromise: one of the oldest cities in India with a temple complex worth a full day. Stopping there leaves a comfortable four and a half hours to the tip and turns a punishing drive into two good ones.
Trichy works as an earlier break if you prefer two shorter days, with the Rockfort and Srirangam to fill the evening.
The best version of this trip is not a journey to Kanyakumari at all — it is a southern circuit: Chennai, Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, and home from Madurai or Trivandrum. What is at Kanyakumari
The southern tip of the Indian mainland, where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet.
The time of day is the whole booking. Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal and sunset over the Arabian Sea, from the same stretch of shore. On a few days around the April full moon you can watch the sun set and the moon rise across the same water, and people plan trips around it.
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands offshore, reached by a ferry that is weather-dependent and does get suspended — so have a second plan. Beside it rises the Thiruvalluvar statue, 133 feet for the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural.
On the shore, the Bhagavathy Amman temple has drawn pilgrims to this point far longer than either memorial has existed, and the Gandhi Mandapam is built so the sun falls on the memorial stone on his birthday.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Split across two or three days with a night at Madurai, this is exactly the trip an Ertiga does well — four or five people, a week’s luggage with the third row folded, long flat highway where the fuel cost matters. In one push with six adults it is not a trip we would sell, and we would tell you that rather than take the fare.

Both, if you have broken the journey and stayed a night at the tip. Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal and sunset over the Arabian Sea from the same point is the reason people come, and it needs an overnight to do.
Is a one-way drop much cheaper?
Dramatically. A round trip means paying for 1,400 km. Nearly everyone flies back from Trivandrum or Madurai, or continues along the Kerala coast.
