Into the deep south
Tirunelveli sits on the Thamirabarani, the river that makes this part of Tamil Nadu green in a way the surrounding country is not, and it is the gateway to the deep south — Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tiruchendur and the Western Ghats foothills all open out from here.
The drive down from Madurai is three hours of straightforward NH44 through Virudhunagar and Sankarankovil, with the land drying and flattening before the river valley greens it again.
Courtallam, and why timing is everything
The single most useful thing on this page: the Courtallam falls are seasonal.
Courtallam — Kuttralam — is a cluster of waterfalls in the Ghats west of Tirunelveli, and during and after the south-west monsoon, roughly June to September, they are spectacular and busy, with bathing under the falls being the whole point. The Main Falls, Five Falls and Old Falls each have their own character.
Outside that window they can be reduced to very little, and visitors who have driven three hours specifically to see them are understandably unhappy.

What else is here
The Nellaiappar temple in the town is very large and less visited than its quality deserves, with a musical pillar hall and an enormous corridor.
Tiruchendur, on the coast to the east, is one of the six principal abodes of Murugan, with the sea directly behind the temple — a genuinely unusual setting. It pairs naturally with Tirunelveli into two days.
Manjolai and the tea estates in the hills above Manimuthar are little known and worth the detour for anyone who likes empty places.
And the halwa. Tirunelveli halwa is not a tourist invention — it is made with wheat milk using water from the Thamirabarani, cooked long in ghee, and it is unlike halwa anywhere else. Buy it from the old shops rather than a highway stall.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Three hours of flat road, usually with a family group and often continuing further south the next day. Comfortable for six over this distance, and with the third row folded the boot takes a week’s luggage for four or five — which is the usual configuration for a deep-south circuit rather than a single hop.
