Check the calendar before anything else
Sabarimala is unlike every other destination on this site because the temple is closed most of the year.
It opens for the Mandala Pooja season from around mid-November to late December, for Makaravilakku in mid-January, and for a few days at the beginning of each Malayalam month. Outside those windows there is nothing to travel for.
So the first question is not the fare. It is when, and we would rather have that conversation before you book than after.
What the journey actually is
The road runs west from Madurai through Theni, over the border at Kumily, and on through Erumely — traditionally where pilgrims begin — toward Pampa. Around five and a half hours.
Pampa is where the car stops. From there the ascent to the shrine is on foot, several kilometres uphill through forest. There is no vehicle access beyond that point for pilgrims, and anyone suggesting otherwise is misinformed.
So a Sabarimala car booking is: drive to Pampa, wait — often a long time — and drive back. In peak season the wait can be most of a day, because the darshan queue is measured in hours rather than minutes.
Plan for a full day and night, not a day trip. Many groups travel overnight to arrive for an early climb.
The season changes everything
During Mandala Pooja the whole approach is actively managed — parking arrangements, approach roads and permitted vehicle access all change, sometimes day to day, and the volume of pilgrims is enormous.

Erumely is where many pilgrims perform the traditional rituals before the climb, and some groups want to stop there.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Five and a half hours each way with a group of pilgrims travelling light — the traditional irumudikettu rather than suitcases — followed by a long wait. Six seats keep a group together in one vehicle, which matters on a pilgrimage more than usual. The car is stationary for hours, so this is a round trip with an extended wait rather than two journeys, and the night halt allowance applies if the driver stays over.
