A working city
Tuticorin — officially Thoothukudi — is one of India’s significant ports, with a large industrial hinterland: salt pans, chemicals, thermal power, and a long history in pearl fishing that gave the place its old name of the Pearl City.
It is not a tourist destination, and this page is written on that basis. Most of what we drive on this route is business travel and airport transfers, and the useful content is about how to structure a working day rather than what to photograph.
The working day
Two and three quarter hours each way on the NH38 via Aruppukottai — flat, straightforward, no ghats and no border. That makes a same-day return comfortable, which is the shape most of these bookings take.
For a day of meetings or port business, book the round trip with waiting. You will not know when you are finished, port access can be slow, and a waiting car is worth considerably more than the difference between a round trip and two drops. Waiting is charged by the hour at the published rate.
The airport
Tuticorin airport sits outside the city and takes a growing amount of traffic. A good number of these bookings are people flying out of here rather than Madurai, either because the schedule suits or because a Madurai seat was not available.

For a spare afternoon
Manapad, on the coast south of the city, is the one thing here worth going out of your way for. A headland with an old Portuguese church — Holy Cross — built in the sixteenth century, standing above the sea with almost nobody around. The village is a fishing settlement and the setting is genuinely striking.
Tiruchendur, one of the six principal abodes of Murugan, is up the coast and pairs naturally with Manapad for anyone making a day of it.
The salt pans north of the city are strange and photogenic in the late afternoon, if industrial landscape appeals.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Business travel here usually means three or four people with laptop bags rather than suitcases, and a lot of getting in and out at different sites through the day. Six seats give room to work in the car, the cabin is quiet enough for calls, and over a regular weekly run the fuel cost against a larger MPV is materially lower. This is a route where the Ertiga is the sensible choice rather than a compromise.
