Eight hours, then a mountain
Kodaikanal is reachable from Madurai in three hours and from Coimbatore in four and a quarter. From Chennai it is 520 km and eight and a half hours of plains driving before the climb even starts.
That last detail is the point of this page. The Kodai ghat above Batlagundu is a proper ascent, and the wrong time to drive it is at the end of a long day with the light going. We will say so when you book.
Break it — and Dindigul is the smart stop
Two sensible options:
Dindigul is the closest useful town to the climb — under two hours from the top. A night there means starting the ghat in the morning with the whole day ahead. It also has a fort on a rock worth an hour, and a local reputation for biryani that locals will insist you honour.
Madurai is the better stop if you want the trip to include a city. It is an hour or so further from the climb but it gives you the Meenakshi temple and a proper evening.
Either way, the shape is: plains on day one, ghat on day two. That costs a night and buys you the drive rather than merely surviving it.
The road
The NH38 via Trichy and Dindigul, then the turn west toward Batlagundu and up. Fast four-lane highway almost all the way to the foot of the hills, which is why the distance is manageable and the arithmetic still defeats a single day.
What is at Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal sits at around 2,100 metres in the Palani hills, and it is the greener, wetter, quieter alternative to Ooty.
Kodai Lake, star-shaped with a walking path around it. Coaker’s Walk along a cliff edge, with an enormous view when the cloud allows and a wall of white when it does not. Pillar Rocks — three granite columns standing together — and Guna Cave beneath them. Dolphin’s Nose, a flat rock projecting over a sheer drop, reached on foot.
The shola forest patches are what distinguish Kodaikanal: genuine remnant high-altitude forest rather than plantation, and quiet if you walk twenty minutes from the lake.
And it is properly cold in the evenings — a surprise for anyone who left Chennai in the heat two days earlier.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Split across two days it works well for four or five people with hill luggage and the third row folded, and the ride quality is welcome on the ghat. As a single push with six adults it is not something we would recommend, and on a route that ends with a mountain climb we would rather have the conversation before you leave.

Can we do this in one day?
Eight and a half hours of plains driving and then a ghat climb. Technically yes; we would rather you did not. The Kodai ghat is not a road to meet when you are tired and losing light.
Where should we break it?
Madurai or Dindigul. Dindigul is closest to the climb — under two hours from the top — so a night there means going up fresh in the morning. Madurai is the better stop if you want a city and a temple as part of the trip.
Is a permit needed?
No. Chennai and Kodaikanal are both in Tamil Nadu. A hill charge applies on the ghat section and we quote it upfront.
Which is nearer, Kodaikanal from Chennai or Ooty?
Roughly the same, and both are too far for a single comfortable day. Kodaikanal is the quieter of the two once you are there; Ooty has more to do and more people.
Is a one-way drop worth it?
At 520 km, yes. Many people go up by car and come back through Madurai or fly out of Madurai or Coimbatore.
