A town governed by the moon
Most destinations have a best time of day. Tiruvannamalai has a best and worst date, and getting that wrong changes the trip completely.
Arunachala, the hill the town sits beneath, is one of the five elemental Shiva sites — the one representing fire. On full-moon night, hundreds of thousands of people walk Girivalam, the fourteen-kilometre circumambulation of the hill, barefoot, through the night.
If that is what you have come for, arrive early, expect road closures near the temple, and accept that you will park a long way out and walk. It is one of the largest regular gatherings in Tamil Nadu and it is extraordinary.
If it is not what you have come for, avoid the two days either side. The same town on an ordinary Tuesday is calm, and you can drive round the hill in an hour.
What is at Tiruvannamalai
The Annamalaiyar temple is enormous — one of the largest temple complexes in India, with a gopuram of some sixty-six metres and vast concentric prakarams. It takes longer to walk than people expect.
Sri Ramana Ashram, at the foot of the hill, is where Ramana Maharshi lived for decades. It is quiet, unadorned, and many visitors find it the part of the day that stays with them. The Virupaksha cave on the hillside above, where he lived earlier, is a climb of twenty or thirty minutes.
Climbing Arunachala itself is possible — a couple of hours to the summit, best started before dawn, and hot and exposed after mid-morning.
The road
Out through Kanchipuram and Vandavasi, three and a half hours on ordinary state highway rather than a four-lane run. It is a pleasant drive through agricultural country.
Kanchipuram is on the way, which is why a good number of these bookings do both — temples in Kanchipuram in the morning, Tiruvannamalai in the afternoon and evening, back the next day.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Three and a half hours with a family group who will be walking a great deal at the far end, often including older relatives making a pilgrimage. Easy step-in and six seats matter more here than luggage space. On a Girivalam trip the car will be parked for hours and you will be on foot, so a round trip with waiting is the right structure rather than two drops.

It is the circumambulation of Arunachala hill on foot, about fourteen kilometres, and on full-moon night hundreds of thousands of people do it. If you travel then, expect road closures, no parking near the temple and a completely different town. If you want a quiet visit, avoid the two days either side of the full moon.
Can the car take us round the hill?
There is a road around it, but on Girivalam nights it is closed or impassable and the point is to walk. On ordinary days a drive round the hill is a pleasant hour with several small shrines along the way.
Is a permit needed?
No. Tiruvannamalai is in Tamil Nadu, about three and a half hours from Chennai.
What time should we leave Chennai?
By five in the morning for a normal visit — the temple is calmer early and the hill is climbable before the heat. For a full-moon visit, much earlier, and be prepared to park a long way out.
Can we visit the ashram as well?
Yes, Sri Ramana Ashram is at the foot of the hill and is open to visitors. It is quiet, and many people find it the more affecting of the two stops.
