What is at Mysore
Mysore is the easiest city in South India to spend two days in, and the expressway has turned it into a plausible day trip from Bangalore as well.
Mysore Palace is the obvious draw and deserves the time — the Indo-Saracenic frontage is only the beginning, and the interior is far more extravagant than photographs suggest. Chamundi Hills gives you the city from above, with the enormous Nandi partway down that most visitors remember more clearly than the summit. The zoo is genuinely one of the country’s better ones.
Srirangapatna, a short way before you reach Mysore, is the stop this route rewards: the island fort, Tipu Sultan’s summer palace with its painted walls, and the Gumbaz. Taking it on the way in works better than driving back out for it later.
A note on the drive itself. The expressway bypasses the towns that used to be this journey — Ramanagara’s rock country, and the Maddur stop that generations of travellers took for vada. If you want those, they are a deliberate choice now rather than something that happens to you. Say so when you book.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Short, fast, entirely flat, and heavily booked by families going for a weekend. Six passengers over two and a half hours is comfortable, and with the third row folded the boot takes a weekend’s luggage without argument. It is our highest-volume route out of Bangalore.

How long does it take now the expressway is open?
Around two and a half hours of actual driving, which is markedly quicker than it used to be. The variable is not the highway any more — it is how long it takes you to get out of Bangalore and onto it.
Do we still pass Ramanagara and Maddur?
Not on the expressway itself — it bypasses the towns that used to define this drive. If you specifically want the Maddur vada stop or the Ramanagara rock country, tell the driver and he will take the old road for that stretch.
Can we stop at Srirangapatna on the way?
Yes, and it is a good use of an hour. It sits just before Mysore, so it is a natural last stop rather than a detour — the fort, Tipu Sultan's summer palace and the Gumbaz are all close together.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both cities are in Karnataka, so there is no interstate permit on this route.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip genuinely works now, which was not really true before the expressway. You would still see more with a night in Mysore, particularly if you want Chamundi Hills and the palace without rushing.
