The quieter coffee country
Chikmagalur does the same job as Coorg and gets a fraction of the traffic. Both are Karnataka coffee districts about four and a half hours from Bangalore; the difference is that Coorg has become a weekend resort destination and Chikmagalur largely has not.
If what you want is plantations, hills and quiet, this is the better booking. If you want restaurants and organised activities, Coorg is.
The Hassan problem
The route runs out on the NH75 through Hassan, and that stretch is the one to plan around. It slows noticeably as the day goes on, and unlike a city exit it sits in the middle of your journey — so hitting it late costs you time you cannot make up on either side.
A six o’clock departure from Bangalore gets you through Hassan while it is still moving. This is the single most useful thing a driver who knows this road brings to the trip.
Belur and Halebidu, which you should not skip
Close to the route sit two of the most extraordinary buildings in India. The Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu are covered in stone carving of a density and fineness that has to be seen rather than described — friezes of elephants, lathe-turned pillars, figures worked in soapstone to a level of detail that looks impossible.
They cost about two hours for the pair. Almost everyone who skips them to save time regrets it. Say at booking that you want them and the driver builds the day around it.
What is at Chikmagalur
Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, with a road most of the way up and a short climb at the end. Baba Budangiri on the same ridge. Hebbe and Kalhatti falls, both requiring some effort to reach, which is part of why they stay pleasant. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary to the north.
And the coffee itself — a great many estates take visitors, and a plantation walk here is a quieter thing than its Coorg equivalent.
Note that roads within the district are slow, so a plan with four stops in a day will become a plan with two.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a half hours out, then slow narrow estate roads at the far end — where a smaller, more manoeuvrable vehicle is an advantage rather than a compromise. Comfortable for four or five with a weekend’s luggage. Six adults for that long is a stretch, and we will tell you so.

Same idea, fewer people. Both are Karnataka coffee country at similar distances from Bangalore. Coorg is more developed and busier at weekends; Chikmagalur is quieter, higher in places, and better if what you want is the plantations rather than the resorts.
Is a permit needed?
No. Chikmagalur is in Karnataka, so no interstate permit applies — one of the reasons it prices cleanly as a weekend from Bangalore.
Why leave so early?
The Hassan stretch of the NH75 slows considerably later in the day, and it sits in the middle of your journey rather than at the end. A six o'clock departure gets you through it before it thickens.
Can we stop at Belur and Halebidu?
Yes, and you should. They are close to the route and the Hoysala temple carving there is among the finest stonework anywhere in India. Allow two hours for the pair and treat them as part of the trip, not a detour.
Two nights or three?
Two works. Three is better if you want Mullayanagiri and the falls as well as time on a plantation, because the roads within the district are slow.
