The inland road
Pondicherry is usually approached from Chennai, down the coast. From Bangalore it is a completely different journey — inland the whole way, through Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai and Tindivanam, with no sea until you arrive.
That sounds like a loss and it is not, because of what sits on the road.
Tiruvannamalai, the reason to take this route slowly
Roughly two thirds of the way you pass Tiruvannamalai, and it is worth two hours of anybody’s day.
The Annamalaiyar temple is among the largest temple complexes in India, with a gopuram of some sixty-six metres and vast concentric enclosures. Behind it rises Arunachala, one of the five elemental Shiva sites — the one representing fire — and the hill that hundreds of thousands of people walk around on full-moon nights.
Sri Ramana Ashram at the foot of the hill is quiet and unadorned and many visitors find it the more affecting stop.
Chennai travellers to Pondicherry never see any of this. It is the one genuine advantage of the inland approach, and it is why we mention it before the destination.
Getting out of Bangalore
As on every route heading east and south from Bangalore, the highway is not the slow part — the city exit is. The corridor through Electronic City and Attibele can absorb an hour before you are properly moving. Leaving before the morning build-up makes a real difference to the total.
What is at Pondicherry
The French Quarter — mustard and white colonial houses, bougainvillea, blue shutters, streets on a grid that feels nothing like the rest of the region. The promenade along the seafront closes to traffic in the evenings and the whole town walks it.
Auroville, the experimental township north of town, is a half day rather than an hour. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is in the middle of the old quarter.
And the food, which is genuinely distinct — Tamil, French and Creole influences that exist nowhere else in India in quite this combination.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Five and a half hours of ordinary highway with a stop in the middle where everyone gets out and walks a large temple. Six seats comfortable over the distance, and with the third row folded there is room for a weekend’s luggage for five. On the Bangalore approach the stop breaks the journey usefully, which makes the third row more tolerable than the same distance in one push.

Completely. Chennai comes down the coast on the ECR, past Mahabalipuram. Bangalore comes inland through Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai — no sea until you arrive, but Arunachala hill on the way, which the coastal route never sees.
Is Tiruvannamalai worth stopping at?
Yes, and it is the distinguishing feature of this approach. The Annamalaiyar temple is one of the largest in India and Arunachala hill behind it is one of the five elemental Shiva sites. Two hours, and it is directly on your road.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Puducherry is a separate union territory, so a permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted before you travel.
How long is the drive?
About five and a half hours. Getting out of Bangalore through Hosur Road is the slow part, as it is on every route heading this way.
Is a drop cheaper than a round trip?
Yes, notably. A round trip means paying for 630 km. If you are continuing to Chennai afterwards, or flying home from there, take the drop.
