Seven hours, and a decision about when
Bangalore to Madurai is around 435 km on the NH44 through Salem and Dindigul — good four-lane highway essentially the whole way, and seven hours before anybody stops for anything.
At that length the useful question is when to travel, and on this route the answer is usually overnight. The road is good, the traffic thins after dark, and you arrive in Madurai in the morning with a full day rather than at nine at night having lost one. The driver’s rest is planned around it.
If you travel by day, leave early and break at Salem, roughly halfway. For anyone with an extra day, Yercaud — the quiet hill station above Salem — turns a necessary stop into a reason to stop.
Madurai is usually a beginning
This is the part most booking sites miss. Madurai is the base for the far south — Rameswaram out east across the Pamban crossing, Kanyakumari at the tip, Thekkady over the Kerala border, Kodaikanal up in the hills.
A large share of these journeys are therefore the first leg of a circuit, not a destination. Which means two things:
Do not book a round trip unless you genuinely intend to drive back to Bangalore. You almost certainly do not — most people continue and fly home, or come back a different way.

At Madurai
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the reason most people stop, and the practical detail that matters more than any description: the car cannot drop you at the entrance. The streets around it are narrow and partly restricted; you walk the last stretch and the driver waits at a designated spot. Agree the meeting point before you go in, because visitors routinely come out of a different gate.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Seven hours of flat highway is where an Ertiga’s running cost against a larger MPV is at its most favourable, and for four or five people with a week’s luggage and the third row folded it is genuinely comfortable. Six adults for seven hours is not something we would sell, and if the trip continues into a southern circuit afterwards that discomfort repeats daily — so tell us the group size for the whole journey, not this leg.

Yes. You cross from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, so an interstate permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted before you travel.
Where is the natural break if we travel by day?
Salem, roughly halfway, or Dindigul closer to the far end. Salem is the more practical stop and Yercaud above it is worth a night for anyone with the time.
Is this usually the start of a longer trip?
