The lodge sets the clock
Kabini is a wildlife booking, and that means the schedule is not yours.
The lodges here run on fixed timings — arrival, lunch, and then the afternoon safari, which typically leaves mid-afternoon. If you arrive after it has gone, you have lost a safari you paid for, and there is no later one.
So the sequence is: book the lodge, get the timings, then book the car. Four hours from Bangalore with a hard arrival time means leaving in the morning, and our drivers plan the last stretch generously because it is the unpredictable part.
The road, and why the last hour is slow
The route runs down the good highway to Mysore, then turns out through H D Kote on narrower rural roads toward the reserve. That final section is where the time goes — it is farmland and village road rather than highway, and it does not reward optimism.
Many people split the journey at Mysore, either as a stop or as a night. Given Mysore is worth a day on its own and it removes the pressure from the arrival time, that is often the better trip. A large share of what we drive here is really a Mysore-and-Kabini booking.
What is at Kabini
Kabini is the western part of the Nagarhole reserve, on the backwaters of the Kabini river, and its reputation rests on two things: an unusually high concentration of elephants in the dry months, when the receding water draws them to the banks, and a genuine chance of leopard.
Safaris run as jeep drives and, distinctively here, as boat safaris on the backwaters — which is a different and often better way to see animals coming down to drink.
Tiger is present and rarely seen. Wild dog, gaur, sambar, chital and a very long bird list are the realistic returns.
As at every reserve, the safari is run in the park’s own vehicles, not ours. We bring you to the lodge and take you home.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four hours out, the last of it on rough rural road where a smaller vehicle is more comfortable than a large one, carrying a group with a couple of nights’ luggage. Fold the third row and four or five people’s bags fit easily. Six adults for four hours is a stretch, and on a trip this expensive at the far end we would rather you arrived comfortable.

Is Kabini better than Bandipur or Nagarhole?
It is the same forest system — Kabini is the western part of the Nagarhole reserve, on the backwaters of the Kabini river. It is known for a high density of elephants in the dry months and for leopard sightings, and it is more expensive and more comfortable than the alternatives. Whether that is better depends on what you want.
Should we go via Mysore and stay a night?
It is a good idea if you have the time. It splits a four-hour drive and Mysore is worth a day in itself. A great many Kabini trips are actually Mysore-and-Kabini trips for exactly this reason.
