Up to the border at Kumily
The road from Madurai to Thekkady runs west through Theni, then climbs to Kumily on the Kerala border, where the cardamom hills begin. That final section is the good part of the drive — the air changes, the plantations start, and the temperature drops.
It is about four hours, and the climb makes it slower than the distance implies.
Because you cross a state line, an interstate permit applies. It is a quoted line on your fare rather than a delay, since we hold Kerala permits already.
Book the boat before you book the car
This is the practical heart of the trip, and it is where most Thekkady plans come apart.
The Periyar lake cruises run in fixed slots and they sell out. The lake is the reason to come — a reservoir with drowned tree stumps standing in it and elephants, gaur and sambar coming down to drink — and it is seen from a boat. Arriving without a ticket means looking at it from the bank.
So: book the slot, then tell us the time, and we set the departure from Madurai around it. The early morning boats are the ones where animals actually appear, which is another argument for staying the night rather than driving up and back in a day.
What else is at Thekkady
The Periyar Tiger Reserve offers more than the boat — guided nature walks, bamboo rafting and a border hike, all of which need booking and all of which are better than the boat for actually seeing anything.
Kumily itself is a spice town, and the cardamom, pepper and clove plantations around it take visitors. It is a genuine working agriculture rather than a display, and the smell of a cardamom drying shed is worth the stop.
There are elephant rides and spice-garden tours heavily marketed here; opinions vary and we will not pretend otherwise.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four hours with a climb at the end, carrying luggage for a night or two, usually as part of a longer circuit. Comfortable for four or five with the third row folded. Six adults for four hours on a climbing road is a stretch, and on a circuit that continues to Kodaikanal or Munnar afterwards it becomes a stretch repeated daily — so tell us the group size and the full itinerary, not just this leg.

Is a permit needed?
Yes. Thekkady is in Kerala and you start in Tamil Nadu, so an interstate permit applies. It is charged at actuals, quoted before you travel, and we already hold it.
How long is the drive?
About four hours, out through Theni and up to Kumily at the border. The last stretch climbs through cardamom country and is slower than the distance suggests.
Can we do it as a day trip from Madurai?
You can, and it is a long day for what you get. Four hours each way to spend two hours on a boat is poor value. One night at Thekkady turns it into a proper trip and lets you take an early boat, which is when the animals actually come to the water.
Is it part of a bigger circuit?
Very often. Thekkady combines naturally with Kodaikanal from Madurai, and some circuits continue to Munnar or Alleppey rather than returning. Tell us the whole plan and we will price it as one journey.
