Up the Batlagundu ghat
Kodaikanal is reachable from several of our cities, and Madurai is the closest — about three and a quarter hours, up through Batlagundu and the ghat that climbs from there. Coimbatore’s approach is longer and comes round the Palani side.
That matters practically: from Madurai, Kodaikanal is a genuine two-night trip where you arrive with the day still usable. From further afield it is a drive with a hill station at the end of it.
The ghat itself is the interesting part — a steady climb through changing vegetation, with the plains falling away behind you and the temperature dropping noticeably as you go. Morning is the time to do it. Mist on the upper bends is common from the early afternoon and it turns a pleasant climb into a slow one.
What is at Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is a Palani hills station at around 2,100 metres, and it is greener, wetter and quieter than Ooty.
Kodai Lake, star-shaped and ringed by a walking and cycling path, is the centre of the town and pleasantly unspectacular. Coaker’s Walk is a narrow paved path along the edge of a steep drop with an enormous view on a clear day and a wall of cloud on others. Bryant Park is the formal garden beside the lake.
The better things are slightly further out. Pillar Rocks — three granite columns standing together — and Guna Cave below them. Dolphin’s Nose, a flat rock projecting over a sheer drop, reached on foot. Silver Cascade on the way up, which everyone stops at.
And the thing visitors from the plains consistently get wrong: it is properly cold in the evenings. You left Madurai in the heat that morning; bring a layer.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A short climb with two or three nights’ luggage. Comfortable for six over three hours, and with the third row folded there is generous room for four or five plus bags. This is one of the ghat routes where an Ertiga is genuinely well suited rather than merely adequate — the climb is moderate and the distance is short.

How long is the climb from Madurai?
Around three and a quarter hours in total, of which the ghat above Batlagundu is the slow part. It is the shortest approach to Kodaikanal from any of our cities, which is what makes a two-night trip sensible from here.
Is a permit needed?
No. Kodaikanal is in Tamil Nadu, so there is no interstate permit on this route.
When is the ghat clearest?
Morning. Afternoon mist is common on the upper bends and it slows everything down. Leaving Madurai by seven gets you up in good visibility with the day still ahead of you.
Can we add it to a Rameswaram or Kanyakumari circuit?
Yes, and it changes the character of the circuit — a hill stop in the middle of otherwise flat, hot travel. It also means a night at altitude, which most people appreciate more than they expect.
Is it colder than we think?
Usually, yes. Visitors arriving from Madurai in particular underestimate it, because they have come from the plains in the same morning. Bring something warm for the evenings even in the hot months.
