The widest waterfall in India, when the water is there
Athirappilly is where the Chalakudy river comes over a rock shelf about eighty feet high and, at full flow, some three hundred feet wide. In monsoon it is one of the genuinely impressive sights in South India.
In the dry months it is a fraction of that. Still a waterfall, still a pleasant drive, but not the thing the photographs promised — and four hours each way is a long way to go for the reduced version.

Through the Gap and into Kerala
The route runs west through the Palakkad Gap — the one substantial break in the Western Ghats — and then south via Chalakudy. About four and a half hours, and the last section climbs gently into forest.
Because you cross into Kerala, an interstate permit applies. It is quoted before you travel and we hold it already.
At the falls
There are two viewing options and they are quite different.
From the top, a short walk from the car park, you look across the width of the fall as the river goes over. Accessible to everybody.
From the base, reached by a path down through forest, you get the full height and the noise and the spray. It is a real descent on uneven steps and a real climb back. Allow an hour, and be honest about who in the group should attempt it.
Vazhachal, a short way further up the road, is a broader, lower set of rapids and part of the same trip. The drive between the two runs through good forest and is worth taking slowly.
This is also elephant country — the Vazhachal forest division is significant habitat — so the usual rules apply on the road.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a half hours of level driving through the Gap, no mountain climbing, with a group who will get out and walk a steep path. Comfortable for six over this distance. Bring a change of clothes if you go to the base in monsoon — the spray is not gentle — and fold the third row to carry it.

There is a path down, and it involves a proper descent and climb back on uneven steps. It is where the view is best and it is not suitable for everyone. Allow an hour and think about who in the group can manage it.
Can we add Vazhachal?
Yes, it is a short way further up the same road and part of the same trip. Most people do both, and the drive between them runs through good forest.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works — four hours each way is long but manageable. An overnight lets you be at the falls early, which is when the light is best and the crowd is thinnest.
