Two reserves and a state line
Four of our cities reach Ooty and this is the only approach that goes through forest to get there.
The road runs south through Gundlupet, into the Bandipur reserve, across the state line into Mudumalai on the Tamil Nadu side, and then climbs the Gudalur ghat into the Nilgiris. Coimbatore’s approach is a plains run and a steep hairpin climb; this one is a wildlife drive followed by a gentle ascent.
That difference is not cosmetic. It changes what the journey is, what time you can leave, and what you should expect to see out of the window.
The closure that sets your departure
Bandipur’s highway closes to through traffic overnight to protect animals crossing after dark. It is enforced.
From Mysore the reserve sits early in the journey, so a mid-morning start clears it without drama. Leave late and you are timing a barrier at the far end of a mountain road, which is a poor way to end a day.
Inside both reserves: no stopping, no feeding, well under the limit where visibility is short. Elephant, gaur, deer and langur cross regularly, and the Mudumalai side is if anything busier than Bandipur.
The climb
The Gudalur ghat is the kindest of the approaches to the Nilgiris — longer and less abrupt than the Kallar hairpins, well surfaced, and climbing through tea and shola rather than open slope. A loaded car handles it comfortably, which is genuinely not true of the Valparai road.
Gudalur itself is the town at the bottom of the climb and the natural place to stop before you go up.

What is worth adding from this direction: arriving via the reserves puts you at the Pykara end of the plateau rather than the Mettupalayam end, so Pykara falls and the lake, and the shola forest around them, are on your way in rather than a separate excursion. Take them on the way up.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Three and a half hours, a good part of it slow through forest where a quiet car and an unhurried driver matter more than pace, then a moderate climb. Comfortable for six over this distance — one of the few Ooty approaches where we can say that, because the ghat is gentle and the distance short.

How is this different from going to Ooty from Coimbatore?
Completely different road. Coimbatore climbs the Kallar ghat from the plains. From Mysore you cross Bandipur and Mudumalai — two tiger reserves — then climb the gentler Gudalur ghat. Same destination, and the journeys have almost nothing in common.
Does the Bandipur night closure affect this route?
Yes, and it is the constraint that sets your departure. The highway through the reserve closes to through traffic overnight to protect animals crossing. A mid-morning start clears it comfortably; a late one does not.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. You cross from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, so an interstate permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted upfront. A hill charge applies on the ghat section.
Which ghat is this?
The Gudalur climb, which is gentler and better surfaced than the Kallar ghat from Mettupalayam. It is the easiest of the approaches to Ooty, once you are past the reserves.
Will we see animals?
Very possibly, across both Bandipur and Mudumalai. No stopping inside the reserves, and considerably below the speed limit where the scrub comes close to the road.
