Weekend-shaped, not pilgrimage-shaped

Bangalore’s multi-day work has a rhythm that almost no booking platform prices for: out on Friday evening, back late on Sunday. Two nights, three days, one car that stays with you throughout.

That is a round trip, and it should be quoted as one — with the daily minimum applied across the days rather than freshly on each leg. Booking it as separate drops costs more, leaves you without a car on the Saturday, and gives you two different drivers.

The circuits, and the paperwork each carries

This is the thing that catches people, because Bangalore’s best destinations sit in three different states:

Mysore and Coorg — three days, no permit. The most-booked circuit we run from here. Mysore’s palace and Chamundi Hills on the way out, two nights in the coffee country, and Srirangapatna or the Namdroling monastery at Bylakuppe on the way back.

Chikmagalur with Belur and Halebidu — three days, no permit. The quieter alternative to Coorg, and the Hoysala stonework at Belur is among the finest in India. Roads inside the district are slow; two stops a day is realistic.

Hampi — three days minimum, no permit. The longest single drive, and we suggest breaking it at Chitradurga, whose hill fort is worth two hours. Avoid the hot months; it is open granite with no shade.

Ooty — four days, Tamil Nadu permit. Through Mysore and Bandipur, which closes to through traffic overnight and therefore sets the departure.

Wayanad — four days, Kerala permit. Same Bandipur constraint, and it sits five hours in rather than two, so we usually suggest splitting at Mysore.

The Friday problem

The single most useful piece of planning advice we give Bangalore customers: the first 40 km out of the city on a Friday evening can take as long as the next hundred.

So we plan around the peak rather than through it. Leaving early afternoon, or waiting until it breaks, both get you to Coorg sooner than departing at six.

Starting from the airport

A common and sensible booking: land at BLR and start the circuit immediately — straight to Mysore or Coorg without a night in Bangalore. The airport is already north of the city, so for some directions it is genuinely closer than the centre.

The car across three days

Four or five people with a weekend’s luggage and the third row folded is where an Ertiga is at its best on these circuits, and the narrow estate roads in Coorg and Chikmagalur genuinely favour a smaller vehicle.

Six adults for a three-day circuit with five-hour drives at either end is more than we would recommend — and on a weekend where the point is to arrive relaxed, that matters more than the saving.
